On the Cover: The Brain Connection, second in a series of cover paintings by Mary Lambert, was inspired by the Directed Reading article "Diagnosis and Treatment of Back Pain." "It's fascinating that much of the way we feel pain has to do with our past history of experiencing pain," Ms. Lambert said. In this work, the neuron suggests the interconnections between a source of pain in the back, thoughts about it and how the pain is perceived.

 

Ms. Lambert, an artist based in Albuquerque, has worked as an editorial illustrator and graphic designer for the past 20 years.
