Breast Biopsy Techniques And Breast Pathology
Breast biopsy is the only definitive technique for determining whether a suspicious breast lesion is cancerous. For decades, surgical biopsy was the only method of obtaining tissue samples for analysis, but today there are many options available. This article reviews current breast cancer statistics and screening guidelines, including the latest recommendation on magnetic resonance screening from the American Cancer Society. Breast biopsy in general is discussed, with a focus on stereotactic breast biopsy practice and technique. Various types of stereotactic breast biopsy and image guidance techniques are explored in detail. The article concludes with a description of the breast biopsy pathology report, different types of breast cancer and benign breast conditions. This article is a Directed Reading.
